On July 22, 2011 Local 1456 and Local 1536 were dissolved by General President Douglass McCarron. The memberships of both Local unions were merged into the newly formed Local 1556.

Although many members have expressed their concerns over the merger, myself included, it is the reality we face and we must move on together. One of the most important issues raised by members of both Locals regarding the proposed restructuring plan was the need to preserve our former Local Unions historical jurisdiction outside of the Five Boroughs of New York City. While the loss of contribution to the funds to the District Council would have been severe hurting us all, the disruption to the lives of hundreds of our members who have spent their entire career outside of New York City would have been devastating. Thanks to the persistence and fortitude of our members Local 1556 will continue to maintain the geographic and trade jurisdiction of the former Local 1456 and 1536 contrary to the proposed restructuring plan.


The following is the preliminary results of the National Labor Relations Board:

NYC and Vicinity District Council of Carpenters - 361 _ Amalgamated - 186

There are 265 Ballots that were challenged that have yet to be counted.


In the News


We will have an election at our next meeting (April 24) for two Trial Committee members.
All voting will take place at the meeting hall by a secret ballot.
The meeting will be held on the second floor of the labor Technical college at 395 Hudson Street.

Mandatory Union Participation:
District Council By-Laws Sec. 21g - "It shall be mandatory that each active member perform at least 1 day or 7 hours of union activity (picketing, etc.) per calendar year when called upon by the New York City District Council of Carpenters. The District Council shall call upon members to perform such activity on a fair and equitable basis. Any assessment, fine or penalty for failure to perform such activity shall be imposed in compliance with section 28 of these By-Laws and sections 52 and 53 of the United Brotherhood's Constitution, and shall be used to defray the expenses of organizing and shall not be used for any other purpose."
